Salman Khan Is The Richest Celebrity In India And Beats Big "B"
By Asraful Alm PARIS

Salman Khan has emerged as the celebrity with the highest earnings in 2014, according to a Forbes list. The actor grossed earnings of Rs 244.5 crore in 2014, according to the magazine.

It is for the first time in three years since Forbes started the rankings that Shah Rukh Khan has been toppled from the top spot. Shah Rukh Khan's money ranking in 2014 dropped to number 2 with earnings of Rs 202.4 crore. His fame rank dropped to seven, leaving his overall ranking at number 3. Salman was number 1 on both counts in 2014- another first, Forbes said.

Celebrities are ranked on two counts - money and fame - in the list.

Shah Rukh's slip in the rankings was mainly owing to the fact that he had no film releases in 2014, whereas Salman Khan had two big releases in the form of Jai Ho and Kick and substantial earnings as a reality television host.

Amitabh Bachchan was second in overall ranking and third in the money rankings with earnings of Rs 196.75 crore. His fame rank was 4.

Indian cricket captain MS Dhoni was ranked at number 4 in overall ranking with earnings of Rs 141.8 crore. His money rank was 5, while his fame rank was 3.

With earnings of Rs 172 crore, actor Akshay Kumar rounded off the top 5.

The Inbetweeners 2 sets box office record on day one

The Inbetweeners 2 sets box office record on day one

Teen comedy The Inbetweeners 2 took £2.7m on its opening night in UK cinemas - a record for a comedy film.

The box office haul suggests the film might be a bigger success than its predecessor, which made £2.58 on its first day in 2011.

The sequel debuted in 495 venues across the country, and scored the third-highest Wednesday opening for any film.

Only Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince, and Lord of the Rings: Return of the King have performed better.

The Inbetweeners 2 sees socially awkward school friends Will, Simon, Jay and Neil reunite for an adventure set in Australia.

Creators Iain Morris and Damon Beesley said they had been caught off guard by the success of the first film, and "fan power" had persuaded them to make a sequel.

But they ruled out a third instalment, saying the current film would be the Inbetweeners' "last hurrah".

"It would be nice to go out on top," actor Simon Bird (Will) told the BBC

"We only considered doing the script because the script was as funny, if not funnier, than the first one."

Arizona mother defends leaving children in 'hot car'

Arizona mother defends leaving children in 'hot car'

A US mother has defended her decision to leave her two young children in a 'hot car' whilst she attended a job interview.

Shanesha Taylor, a 35-year-old single mother from Arizona, thought she would be leaving the children, aged six months and two, for 15 minutes but the interview overran to 40.

On returning, she was arrested, her children were taken into custody, and she was charged with felony child abuse - which carries a maximum total prison sentence of 14 years.

However, Ms Taylor, who was unemployed and "surviving on food stamps" at the time, said it was a choice between giving them future "security" and caring for them "at that moment".

Rio Tinto profits rise as debts and costs are lowered

Rio Tinto profits rise as debts and costs are lowered

Anglo-Australian mining group Rio Tinto has reported a 21% rise in half-year profits to $5.1bn (£3bn).

Rio has been cutting back debts built up in a surge of acquisitions under previous chief executive Tom Albanese.

Sam Walsh, who replaced Mr Alabanese 18 months ago, said net debt had been cut by $6bn from a year ago.

He said: "We delivered what we said we would, exceeding our $3bn operating cash cost reduction target six months ahead of schedule."

In July, Rio announced it would sell off its Mozambique coal assets for just $50m, part of Riversdale Mining which it bought for $3.7bn in 2011.

In the past six months it has cut its workforce by 2,200, and Mr Walsh said although another $1bn would be cut from costs by the end of next year, the rate of savings would slow this year.

Chinese demand

Mr Walsh said the group shipped record iron ore volumes, and set production records for iron ore and thermal coal.

The company is increasing its six-month dividend to shareholders by 15%.

But a slump in commodity prices because of a slowdown in demand from China sliced $1.39bn from underlying earnings.

Much of the reduction in Chinese demand for iron ore came from the slowing construction industry.

Rio now sees the slack there being taken up by renewed demand for machinery and infrastructure and China's own exports of finished steel products.

It expects steel demand in China to grow 3-4% this year.

Six ways to blow a million pounds

You’ve been bequeathed a small fortune from your wealthiest client, had a hefty pay rise, or just found out that your golden handshake makes Angela Ahrendts’ look like small change. All to worry about now is how to spend it… Thank goodness, then, that Laura Powell is on hand to bring you six of the best ways to fritter away that extra £1m

1. Treat yourself to two car parking spaces in Knightsbridge. The bad news is, had you bought them one year ago they would have been a whopping 31% cheaper. But the good news is, at £400,000 a pop you’ll have enough leftover change to loan a private box at the Royal Albert Hall, which is just around the corner. To snap them up, contact estate agents Hobart Slater.

2. Nine shares in Berkshire Hathaway. Betting is a mug’s game. Instead pour your spoils into a surefire bet – nine shares in celebrity stock picker Warren Buffett’s property and insurance conglomerate, Berkshire Hathaway. When this article was published, shares were priced at $191,300 (£114,000), making them the most expensive stocks in the world.

3. One night with BeyoncĂ©. The price for a private performance from the singer has shot up since 2005 – from £750,000 (how much Sir Philip Green reportedly paid for BeyoncĂ© to perform at his son’s Bar Mitzvah) to more than £1m. Or roughly £200,000 per song... Alternatively you could hire George Michael, Tom Jones or Rod Stewart for a similar fee. Unfortunately, the Eagles are out of your price range. Rumour has it, they charged almost £4m to perform Hotel California at a private party…

4. Join the world’s poshest dog owners club. At £1.2m a piece, they’re slightly over budget. And at 90kg, they’re a touch overweight too. But owning a Tibetan mastiff is an instant status symbol (in China) and gives you automatic membership to the elite Tibetan mastiff owner’s club, whose members include a multi-millionaire Chinese property developer and a coal baron.

5. A new Hermes Birkin every month for the next four years. At £17,800 a piece (from Matches), the vintage Birkin 40 is a steal with a budget your size. So you could invest in a new one every month, each in a different colour. Or you could mix it up and vary your monthly buys – perhaps The Row’s Alligator tote (£24,218) for August, and Ralph Lauren’s Alligator Ricky (£17,145) for September.

6. Migrate to Necker Island for winter. Exclusive use of Sir Richard Branson’s Necker Island in the Caribbean will set you back £39,000 – for one night. So for £1m, you could afford to migrate there for the best part of January. With energy bills skyrocketing in the UK, we can’t think of a more sensible investment.

The Marketing Strategy

by- Sabuj Mia

Success through complaints- it sounds odd, a kind of impossible. Ryanair's Low fares, made simple strategy made it possible.Marketing works with the core Business strategy, more like a cover page of a book. A huge budget is required for marketing specifically when a firm is in their growth phase. In the growth phase, a firm's Net Present Value(NPV) is significantly negative due to some one off costs(where marketing forms a significant part of it).In this regards, we came to see a different picture in case of Ryanair. They never paid for marketing(significantly). They advertise low fares which is unexpectedly low.

Ryanair has been succesfull in getting free media coverage through customers. Obviously It was not in a nice way, but a lot of unpleasant complaints. The customers never wanted to be bothered with the tiny font terms and conditions attached. They paid for tickets , and this is what they have been served with. The customers had to pay for foods, drinks and even for toilets on their journey. What about the customer services-It was the horrible one many customers complained. They had many lawsuits for bad services. Many customers took Ryanair to the courts which resulted media to report frequently as a cheapest Ryanair services' storiesGlobal recession hit Europe badly leaving people with less disposable money. In recession people read on papers watched on TV, and importantly found a way to make a cheap holiday. This is how Ryanair made success through complaints...

An Accounting Error Leads Bank of America's shares drop

An accounting error leads Bank of America's shares drop

Bank of America reported a loss of $276m as a result of more than $6bn worth of legal expenses

Shares in US banking giant Bank of America dropped 6% after the bank announced a suspension of its capital plan due to an accounting error.

In a statement, the bank said the error had to do with how it calculated losses relating to its acquisition of investment bank Merrill Lynch in 2009.

Bank of America had announced plans to buy back £2.4bn of its shares and boost its dividend.

The US Central Bank said the bank would now have to suspend that plan.

Bank of America has 30 days to submit a corrected balance sheet, as well as a new capital plan, subject to approval of the US central bank, the Fed said in a statement.

Bank of America recently reported a $276m (£165m) loss as a result of more than $6bn in legal expenses it paid to settle allegations that it misled mortgage lenders Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac before the housing crisis in 2008, as well as for other mortgage-related matters.

What causes my skin to itch?

by Dr. Murad A Alam FRCS,PhD, MCPS!

Itching is an unpleasant sensation that compels a person to scratch the affected area. Mild to moderate itching is a common symptom but occasionally may be severe and frustrating. The medical name for itching is pruritus.

Itching can affect any area of the body. It can either be:
  • generalised – where itching occurs over the whole body
  • localised – where itching only occurs in a particular area
Sometimes, there is a rash or a spot where the itching occurs.

Common causes of itching:

Itching can be caused by a number of different conditions. For example:
  • a skin condition, such as eczema
  • an allergy or skin reaction
  • a parasitic infestation, such as scabies
  • insect bites and stings
  • a fungal infection, such as athlete’s foot orthrush
  • a systemic condition (one that affects the whole body), such as liver or kidney problems or an overactive thyroid gland
  • hormonal changes during pregnancy or the menopause
Read more detailed information about possible causes of itching.

Things you can do:

In many cases, treating the underlying condition will ease the itching. However, there are things you can do to relieve itching, including:
  • using a cold compress, such as a flannel
  • applying calamine lotion to the affected area
  • using unperfumed personal hygiene products
  • bathing in cool water
  • not wearing clothes that irritate your skin, such as wool or man-made fabrics
  • keeping skin moist
There are also medicines such as antihistamines and steroid creams that may help to relieve the symptoms of itching caused by certain skin conditions.
Read more about treatments to relieve itching.

When to see your GP:

Many cases of itching will get better over a short period of time. However, it is important to visit your GP if your itching is not improving or is affecting your quality of life.
You should see your GP if your itching is:
  • severe
  • lasts for a long time
  • keeps coming back
  • is associated with other symptoms, such as breathing problems, skin inflammation or jaundice
Also visit your GP as soon as possible if your entire body itches and there is no obvious cause. It could be a symptom of a more serious condition.
Your GP may carry out tests to determine the cause of the itching, such as:
  • a skin scraping – the affected area of skin is scraped to obtain a sample, which can be analysed to help diagnose a skin condition
  • a vaginal or penile swab if a yeast infection is suspected; a small plastic rod with a cotton ball on one end will be used to obtain the sample
  • a blood test to see if the cause is an underlying disease, such as diabetes, thyroid or kidney disease
  • a biopsy – the area is numbed and a tissue sample is removed for analysis

A LOT CAN HAPPEN OVER A PLATE OF BIRIANI !!!

. by Kazi Shahidul Ahmed

BANGALORE: It was that typical, old-fashioned arranged marriage. The bride had no clue about the groom until the wedding day. And last Sunday was D-day for this 20-year-old Bangalore bride. But that was until the bickering over biryani revealed the true colours of the groom and his folks. The bride too showed she was no doormat and called off the wedding. The incident showed how women's empowerment manifests
itself in the strangest of circumstances. This is how it played out at Shaadi Mahal on Tannery Road on Sunday. The wedding reception was under way, relatives were trickling in and inspecting the buffet. Suddenly a quarrel erupted over the biryani that was served. The groom's family took exception to the chicken biryani that was on the menu. They wanted mutton biryani and entered into an argument with the bride's family. As emotions ran high in Shaadi Mahal, a young voice spoke out loud and clear. It was the feisty bride, conveying her decision not to marry the man. "The wedding date was fixed about 20 days ago, I had not even seen him earlier. They hurried with the wedding as 'he' had to fly back to the Middle East at the earliest," the girl told TOI. It was not just the fight over biryani, she says. The alliance itself seemed a recipe for disaster, she says in hindsight. "My family also had doubts about his moral character and that set me thinking. Finally, the biryani episode settled it and I knew I would not have been happy in the relationship ." She recalled walking straight to the KG Halli police station to save herself from what she believed would have been an unhappy marriage. "My parents accompanied me and the police had promised this would not become public," she said, disappointed over a section of the media having taken her name. "I have been let down by the police and fear social stigma," she said. But that hasn't stopped the brave girl from moving on with life. "Right now, I have decided to go ahead with my studies and not think of marriage," she said. And thankfully, she has the support of her parents in this.

Polydipsia

Polydipsia is a symptom of both diabetes mellitus and diabetes insipidus

Polydipsia:

By Murad A Alam

We all get thirsty at various times during the day. Adequate daily intake of water (several glasses) is very important as water is essential for many bodily functions, including regulating body temperature and removing waste.Polydipsia is the term given to excessive thirst and is one of the initial symptoms of diabetes. It is also usually accompanied by temporary or prolonged dryness of the mouth.

However, if you feel thirsty all the time or your thirst is stronger than usual and continues even after you drink, it can be a sign that not all is well inside your body.

Causes of polydipsia:

Increased thirst is often the reaction to fluid loss during exercise, or to eating salty or spicy foods. It can also be caused by:

Diarrhoea
Vomiting
Profuse sweating
Significant blood loss or
Certain prescription medications
Increased thirst can also occur as a result of high blood sugar levels in people with diabetes or yet to be diagnosed diabetes.

Persistent excessive thirst can be the result of one of the following:

Diabetes mellitus
Diabetes insipidus - a rare condition (unrelated to diabetes mellitus) that occurs when the kidneys are unable to conserve water
Dehydration
Loss of body fluids from the bloodstream into the tissues due to: burns or severe infections (sepsis) or heart, liver, or kidney failure
Psychogenic polydipsia - compulsive water drinking associated with mental/psychiatric disorders
Excessive thirst can be caused by high blood sugar (hyperglycemia), and is also one of the ‘Big 3’ signs of diabetes mellitus.

Increased thirst and diabetes:

Increased thirst in people with diabetes can sometimes be, but certainly not always, an indication of higher than normal blood glucose levels.

People with diabetes with access to blood glucose testing equipment may wish to test their blood sugar levels when they are thirsty to determine whether their blood sugar levels are going too high.

If you do not have blood glucose testing equipment and are experiencing regular thirst which you think may be connected with your diabetes, speak with your health team who should be able to advise you.

As anyone and everyone will have experienced the sensation of feeling thirsty, it is very important not to jump to conclusions.

Recognising symptoms of polydipsia:

However, the symptoms of polydipsia are recognised as:

Having persistent and unexplained thirst, regardless of how much you drink
Passing more than 5 litres of urine a day
When to see your doctor:
If you have diabetes and experience increased thirst for a number of days, you should make an appointment to see your doctor/healthcare team.

If you don’t have diabetes, you should see a doctor if the reason for thirst cannot be explained and particularly if you have other symptoms of diabetes - in paticular polyuria and polyphagia.

POOR SALMAN KHAN !!!!

POOR SALMAN KHAN !!!!

Salman Khan In Ek Tha Movie

Well, before I start sorry for all Salman fans but truth is truth you know too.Anyway, Salman Khan an old name in our subcontinent . Old as senior but obviously he is one of the successful actor and he is also known as very big hear-ted BHAI in Bollywood PAARA (at Bollywood) . But what about his own life ?? Is 48 year old BHAI ever successful in his very own personal life as a married man or settled person ??? If you look back in his previous life you will be little shock cause super star Mr Salman Khan very unlucky with it as he is almost 5 times got married but BHAI have been always unfortunate and super flop in this real life movie .Let's have a look shortly .....

01-Somy Ali- Salman Khan's list of affairs also includes actor Somy Ali. Somy who has acted in films like 'Andolan' and 'Teesra Kaun' met Salman when she came from the US when she was almost 20 years old. While Salman was 10 years older to her, the two soon got into a relationship. This one like the others did not last long and Somy left everything and went back to the US where she started her NGO 'No More Tears' for women and children who have been abused. We hear that Salman still supports her NGO and the two are have remained good friends over the years. However, Salman's notorious behavior while the two were dating became quite famous. Rumours about Salman hitting Somy on her head with a bottle was famously reported. Sadly fans who had hoped to see Salman married, lost another candidate when the two parted ways.02-Sangeeta Bijlani- Former Miss India Sangeeta Bijlani and Bollywood's lover boy Salman Khan came the closest when it comes to marriage. On celebrity chat show 'Koffee With Karan' Salman Khan revealed that even "the cards and all were printed" for his marriage to Sangeeta Bijlani but the two didn't make it to the altar. He also spilled the beans to filmmaker Karan Johar that he got caught. "I get caught. I am stupid" said Salman on further interrogation. Sangeeta Bijlani who went ahead and got married to cricketer Mohammed Azharuddin is still a close friend of Salman and his entire family. Salman and Sangeeta were an item in the 80s and like the Khan revealed on Koffee With Karan, he was almost going to get married to her but added that "girls get cold feet" when it comes to marrying him.03-Aishwarya Rai- This was probably Salman Khan's most reported affair! After all, it was none other than with the world's most beautiful woman- Aishwarya Rai. Salman and Aishwarya who worked together in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's 'Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam' gave each other their hearts of the silver screen as well. Also known as one of the most good looking couple of Hindi cinema, their romance however turned out to be quite ugly. Aishwarya Rai alleged Salman to have physically abused her and tortured her mentally, so much so that actor Vivek Oberoi came to her rescue and turned out to be her knight in shining armour, albeit only for sometime. While Salman and Ash's affair revealed the possessive side of Salman for the world to see, this relationship also eventually came to an end. Fans of the couple wanted to see them exchange wedding vows but sadly this romance ended before they could even reach the wedding chapel04-Katrina Kaif- Katrina Kaif and Salman Khan's affair was another one that almost made it to the altar. While the beautiful Bollywood actress never opened up about her relationship with her mentor Salman Khan, the 'Dabangg' Khan as always played it safe too. The two were in a steady relationship so much so that Katrina was welcomed into the Khan family with open arms. While the media speculated about a possible marriage between the two, news of their break-up was not far away. Salman and Katrina broke up amicably and even went on to do 'Ek Tha Tiger' together. Soon after Katrina allegedly starting dating actor Ranbir Kapoor, while Salman remained single for a while until rumors of a certain Romanian babe Lulia Vantur cropped up. However, even though the two moved on in their personal lives, Salman's friend and actor Aamir Khan wile promoting his film 'Dhoom 3' with Katrina Kaif told reporters "I want Salman Khan, Katrina Kaif to get married". Even after this rather public appeal by Aamir, Salman and Katrina could not be seen inching towards matrimony.05-Salman Khan has kept us on our toes throughout his career, more for his bad boy image and speculations about his wedding plans than his career choices. The handsome actor has at varioustimes hinted at a marriage in the near future, but the same has been a distant dream for his fans so far. Here are five times Bollywood actor Salman Khan almost tied the knot!

Lulia Vantur- Romanian beauty Lulia Vantur is rumored to be Salman Khan's current flame. At an event recently Salman Khan opened up about his love life and hinted at a possible marriage soon. While the rumor mills have already started working over time about this latest development, this is what Salman actually said "Wife, I am thinking to bring from outside...,". The actor has been spotted with his alleged Romanian girlfriend a number of times. Lulia is also doing an item number in Salman's brother-in-law's film 'O Teri'. However, sometime back there were reports that Salman had called of his relationship with Lulia after his family allegedly showed their disapproval. News reports of Lulia allegedly getting married to a Grammy nominated musician sprung up and allegedly, this disappointed the star's family. Till the time Salman Khan does not come out in the open and says "I Do", we are forced to keep our thinking caps on.

Obama calls for peaceful end to island dispute

Obama calls for peaceful end to island dispute

by Rubel Hossain Bhuiyan from Comilla University
President Barack Obama, left, and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe shake hands as they arrive to participate in a bilateral meeting at the Akasaka State Guest House in Tokyo, Thursday, April 24, 2014. Facing fresh questions about his commitment to Asia, Obama will seek to convince Japan's leaders Thursday that he can deliver on his security and economic pledges, even as the crisis in Ukraine demands U.S. attention and resources elsewhere. (AP Photo)

Agencies, TOKYO: President Barack Obama says he wants to see a dispute between China and Japan over islands in the East China Sea resolved peacefully. But he is affirming that US treaty obligations to Japan cover all areas under Japan’s administration. He’s referring to the disputed Senkaku islands. China also claims the remote islands. The dispute has badly strained relations between the two Asian powers.

Obama says the islands have historically been administered by Japan and the US does not believe that they should be subject to change unilaterally. Obama said at a press conference with Japan’s prime minister that he wants the maritime issue to be worked out “through dialogue.” He urged them to “keep the rhetoric low.”

“China’s participation in pushing the DPRK (North Korea) in a different direction is critically important,” the president told a joint press briefing with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

“It is the most destabilising, dangerous situation in all of the Asia-Pacific region.”

Despite his call for China’s help, Obama also underlined US support for Japan, saying that islands at the centre of its bitter territorial dispute with Beijing are covered by a defence treaty that would oblige Washington to act if they were attacked.

“Article five (of the US-Japan security treaty) covers all territories under Japan’s administration including (the) Senkaku islands,” he said, referring to the East China Sea archipelago which Beijing calls the Diaoyus.

“We do not believe that they should be subject to change unilaterally, and what is a consistent part of the alliance is that the treaty covers all territories administered by Japan.”

Obama added that “this is not a new position” and “there’s no red line that’s been drawn”.

“We stand together in calling for disputes in the region, including maritime issues, to be resolved peacefully through dialogue,” he said.

Relations between Tokyo and Beijing are at their lowest point for years. Some observers warn they might come to blows over the islands, where ships from both sides lurk to press claims for ownership.

Abe’s position on historical issues also annoys the Chinese, who accuse him of playing down Japanese atrocities. They are particularly upset by visits he and his cabinet ministers have paid to the Yasukuni Shrine, which honours war criminals among other fallen warriors.

In another sign of history influencing the present, China on Thursday said it had released a Japanese ship seized after its owner paid $28 million compensation in a business dispute dating to Japan’s occupation in the 1930s.

Tokyo warned earlier this week that the seizure could have a chilling effect on the huge trade relationship between China and Japan.

Ministers fear a flood of Chinese compensation claims over wartime wrongs, which they say were all dealt with under the 1972 normalisation of ties.

Japan and other Western-leaning countries say China is also throwing its newfound economic and military weight around in pursuit of territorial claims in the East and South China Seas.

Hundreds of thousands of people around the world yesterday mourned the garment workers who died in the Rana Plaza disaster one year ago.
They also called upon retailers to be more transparent about their supply chains and compensate the victims and their families.
In Paris, people wore funeral shrouds and held placards reading the names, age and profession of the victims as they took part in a protest marking the first anniversary of the Rana Plaza building collapse, reported AFP.
In London, activists protested outside Gap's flagship High Street branch in Kensington over its refusal to join companies that have signed a legally binding Bangladesh Accord for Fire and Building Safety, following the disaster which killed 1,135, mostly garment workers.
The protesters included comedian and writer Mark Thomas, representatives from the charity War on Want, and Tansy E Hoskins, the journalist who has written the new book Stitched Up: The Anti-Capitalist Book of Fashion.
Nadia Idle, a campaigner of London-based rights organisation War on Want, demonstrated outside Gap's store in Kensington with a placard that says "Warning: Lethal Working Conditions.
At lunchtime in London, activists, including fashion designer Katherine Hamnett, formed a human chain outside Gap's flagship Oxford Street branch, according to War on Want. Gap is one of the largest buyers of clothing items from Bangladesh.
At Paddington in Central London, a Benetton store was closed after a protest in front of the store, according to a photo uploaded by Hannah Vickers on her Tweeter account.
A world premiere screening of 'Tears in the Fabric', a film by the Rainbow Collective and supported by War on Want, was to be held in the evening in Tuke Hall at Regents University, according to the website of War on Want.
Several labour groups, including the AFL-CIO, International Labour Rights Forum and United Students Against Sweatshops, were to gather outside the Children's Place, an American retailer, in Columbia Heights in Washington at 5:30pm.
Global labour and rights groups marked the day by criticising the western retailers linked to the disaster, which include Spanish brand Mango, Italian brand Benetton and French retailer Auchan. Alongside forming a human chain on Oxford Street, the Unison union called on members to observe a minute's silence at 11.38am, while ethical fashion industry players are backing a Fashion Revolution Day.
Campaigners believe the international response to the incident has been underwhelming, with a compensation fund for victims of the disaster remaining less than half full.
Of the 29 western brands who sourced clothes from Rana Plaza factories, about half have deposited $15 million into the Rana Plaza Trust Fund against the targeted $40 million despite efforts of the International Labour Organisation, the Clean Clothes Campaign said.
"We urge all the brands that have been working in Bangladesh to contribute to the fund with a considerable sum. They share a collective responsibility for this profoundly unsustainable production model and its hazards, this model that we are now about to change," said Jyrki Raina, general secretary of IndustriALL.
UK International Development Minister Alan Duncan has called on British businesses to act as a "force for good" in Bangladesh.
He said: "One year on, we all need to ask ourselves if we are doing everything we can, and this includes British businesses."
"They have the power to bring about profound and positive change, whether by paying into the compensation fund or making their supply chain even more transparent," a Guardian article quoted the minister as saying.

Hepatitis! A potential threat for life!!

Hepatitis! A potential threat for life!!

written by Dr.Murad from SSMC

The word hepatitis comes from the Ancient Greek word hepar (root word hepat) meaning 'liver', and the Latin itis meaning inflammation. Hepatitis means injury to the liver with inflammation of the liver cells.

What is the liver?

The liver is the largest gland in the human body. It weighs approximately 3 lb (1.36 kg). It is reddish brown in color and is divided into four lobes of different sizes and lengths. It is also the largest internal organ (the largest organ is the skin). It is below the diaphragm on the right in the thoracic region of the abdomen. Blood reaches the liver through the hepatic artery and the portal vein. The portal vein carries blood containing digested food from the small intestine, while the hepatic artery carries oxygen-rich blood from the aorta.

The liver is made up of thousands of lobules, each lobule consists of many hepatic cells - hepatic cells are the basic metabolic cells of the liver.

The liver has a wide range of functions, including:
Detoxification (filters harmful substances form the blood, such as alcohol)
Stores vitamins A, D, K and B12 (also stores minerals)
Protein synthesis (makes certain amino acids - the building blocks of proteins)
The production of biochemicals needed for digestion, such as bile
Maintains proper levels of glucose in the blood
Produces 80% of your body's cholesterol (cholesterol is vital)
The storage glycogen (also converts glucose to glycogen)
Decomposing red blood cells
Synthesizing plasma protein
The production of hormones
Produces urea (the main substance of urine)

Hepatitis can heal on its own with no significant consequence, or it can progress to scarring of the liver. Acute hepatitis lasts under six months, while chronic hepatitis lasts longer.

Most liver damage is caused by 3 hepatitis viruses, called hepatitis A, B and C. However, hepatitis can also be caused by alcohol and some other toxins and infections, as well as from our own autoimmune process (the body attacks itself).

About 250 million people globally are thought to be affected by hepatitis C, while 300 million people are thought to be carriers of hepatitis B.

Not all forms of hepatitis are infectious. Alcohol, medicines, and chemical may be bad for the liver and cause inflammation. A person may have a genetic problem, a metabolic disorder, or an immune related injury. Obesity can be a cause of liver damage which can lead to inflammation. These are known as non-infectious, because they cannot spread form person-to-person.
How many types of hepatitis are there?

There are five main types of hepatitis that are caused by a virus, A, B, C, D, and E - plus types X and G.
Hepatitis A - this is caused by eating infected food or water. The food or water is infected with a virus called HAV (Hepatitis A Virus). Anal-oral contact during sex can also be a cause. Nearly everyone who develops Hepatitis A makes a full recovery - it does not lead to chronic disease.

Hepatitis B - this is an STD (sexually transmitted disease). It is caused by the virus HBV (Hepatitis B Virus) and is spread by contact with infected blood, semen, and some other body fluids. You get Hepatitis B by:

Unprotected sexual intercourse with an infected person (unprotected sex means without using a condom) Using a syringe that was previously used by an infected person (most commonly happens with drug addicts and people who inject steroids).

Having your skin perforated with unsterilized needles, as might be the case when getting a tattoo, or being accidentally pricked. People who work in health care risk becoming infected by accident in this way. Sharing personal items, such as a toothbrush or razor, with an infected person.

A baby can become infected through his mother's milk if she is infected.

Being bitten by someone who is infected. The liver of a person infected with Hepatitis B swells. The patient can suffer serious liver damage due to infection, resulting in cancer. For some patients the hepatitis becomes chronic (very long-term or lifelong). Donated blood is always tested for Hepatitis B.

Hepatitis C - Hepatitis C is usually spread through direct contact with the blood of a person who has the disease. It is caused by the virus HCV (Hepatitis C Virus). The liver can swell and become damaged. In hepatitis C, unlike hepatitis B, liver cancer risk is only increased in people with cirrhosis and only 20% of hep C patients get cirrhosis. Feces is never a route of transmission in hepatitis C. Donated blood is also tested for Hepatitis C.

Misuse of anesthesia can result in the transmission of hepatitis B and hepatitis C viruses, researchers reported in the journal Gastroenterology. The cause of infection tends to be from anesthesia contamination, and not endoscopy contamination. Experts say that more effort is needed to better educate the healthcare community about the importance of strict sterile techniques when using any type of anesthesia.

Hepatitis D - only a person who is already infected with Hepatitis B can become infected with Hepatitis D. It is caused by the virus HDV (Hepatitis D Virus). Infection is through contact with infected blood, unprotected sex, and perforation of the skin with infected needles. The liver of a person with Hepatitis D swells.

Hepatitis E - a person can become infected by drinking water that contains HEV (Hepatitis E Virus). The liver swells but there is no long-term consequence. Infection is also possible through anal-oral sex.

Hepatitis X - if a hepatitis cannot be attributed to the viruses of hepatitis A, B, C, D, or E, it is called Hepatitis X. In other words, hepatitis of an unknown virus.

Hepatitis G - this is a type of hepatitis caused by the Hepatitis G virus (HGV). Usually there are no symptoms. When there are symptoms they are very mild.
What are the signs and symptoms of hepatitis?

Many people with Hepatitis experience either mild symptoms or none at all. Remember that an infected person's feces are always infectious to other people. When symptoms appear, they usually do so about 15 to 180 days after the person has become infected.

The acute phase of hepatitis - symptoms

The initial phase of hepatitis is called the acute phase. The symptoms are like a mild flu, and may include:

    Diarrhea
    Fatigue
    Loss of appetite
    Mild fever
    Muscle or joint aches
    Nausea
    Slight abdominal pain
    Vomiting
    Weight loss

The acute phase is not usually dangerous, unless it develops into the fulminant or rapidly progressing form, which can lead to death.

As the patient gets worse, these symptoms may follow:
  • Circulation problems (only toxic/drug-induced hepatitis)
    Dark urine
    Dizziness (only toxic/drug-induced hepatitis)
    Drowsiness (only toxic/drug-induced hepatitis)
    Enlarged spleen (only alcoholic hepatitis)
    Headache (only toxic/drug-induced hepatitis)
    Hives
    Itchy skin
Light colored feces, the feces may contain pus
Yellow skin, whites of eyes, tongue (jaundice)

Patient outcomes after the acute phase depend on various factors, especially the type of hepatitis.
Treatments for hepatitis
Hepatitis A - There is no treatment specifically for hepatitis A. Doctor will advise the patient to abstain from alcohol and drugs during the recovery. The vast majority of patients with Hepatitis A will recover spontaneously.

Hepatitis B - A patient with Hepatitis B needs to rest. He will require a diet that is high in protein and carbohydrate - this is to repair damaged liver cells, as well as to protect the liver. If this is not enough, the doctor may prescribe interferon. Interferon is an antiviral agent.

Hepatitis C - A patient with Hepatitis C will be prescribed pegylated interferon and ribavirin.

Patients with chronic hepatitis C who are receiving standard HCV treatment may benefit significantly by taking vitamin B12 supplements, researchers reported in the journal Gut. The authors explained that by adding vitamin B12 to standard treatment, the body's ability to fight the virus is greatly improved. According to their study results, patients who are difficult to treat effectively benefit especially well.

Interferon-free therapy for hepatitis C 'cured' 90% of patients, A new study found that an interferon-free combination of drugs was safe, well tolerated and cured over 90% of 380 trial patients with liver cirrhosis in 12 weeks. The research was published in the New England Journal of Medicine in April 2014.

Hepatitis D or E - So far, there is no effective treatment for either Hepatitis D or E.

Non-Viral Hepatitis - If the patient has non-viral hepatitis, the doctor needs to remove the harmful substance. It will be flushed out of the stomach by hyperventilation or induced vomiting. Patients with drug-induced hepatitis may be prescribed corticosteroids.
How to prevent hepatitis

How to prevent Hepatitis A
Wash your hands with soap after going to the toilet
Only consume food that has just been cooked
Only drink commercially bottled water, or boiled water if you unsure of local sanitation
Only eat fruits that you can peel if you are somewhere where sanitation is unreliable

Australia to chase 153
Australia 85/0 (10/20 ov) Bangladesh 153/5 (20/20 ov) Bangladesh put a handsome target of 154 in front of Australia as the teams faced each other in their last match of World T20 Super 10 in Sher-e Bangla National Stadium today. State-run Bangladesh Television and private channel Maasranga TV are telecasting the match live from Mirpur. Earlier, Bangladesh skipper Mushfiqur Rahim won the toss and elected to bat first. Bangladesh ace batsman Shakib Al Hasan and the captain Mushy himself scored 66 and 47 runs respectively off 52 and 36 balls. 5 A Day and your Family (NHS)

Do you cook and shop for a family household, including a fussy eater or two?

It's easier than you might think to ensure everyone gets five portions of fruit and vegetables a day.

There are many ways to introduce more fruit and vegetables into your family's diet. The wider the variety of fruit and vegetables you eat the better.

Dietitian Azmina Govindji gives a few simple tips and ideas to get you started.
Fruit and veg throughout the day

There are plenty of 5 A DAY opportunities throughout your family's day.

"Not all those opportunities are immediately obvious," says Azmina. "A cooked breakfast, for example, can give you several portions if you have grilled mushrooms, baked beans, grilled tomatoes and a glass of unsweetened 100% fruit juice."

Azmina highlights some other 5 A DAY opportunities:
Breakfast – if you have cereal or porridge for breakfast, add some fruit, such as sliced bananas, strawberries or sultanas.
Morning break at school – all children aged between four and six at Local Education Authority-maintained schools are entitled to one free piece of fruit or vegetable a day, which is usually given out at break time. If your child is older, you could send them to school with a piece of fruit to eat at break time. The School Food Regulations ensure that fruit or vegetables are provided at all school food outlets, including breakfast clubs, tuck shops and vending machines.
Lunchtime at school – a school lunch provides your child with a portion of fruit and a portion of vegetables. If you give your child a packed lunch, there are many ways you can add fruit and vegetables. Dried fruit counts towards their 5 A DAY, so why not try a handful of sultanas or a few dried apricots? Put salad in their sandwiches, or give them carrot or celery sticks, cherry tomatoes, satsumas or seedless grapes. A lot of swapping goes on at lunch, so talk to other parents to see if you can all give your children at least one portion.
On the way home from school – at home time, kids are often very hungry. Take this opportunity to give them a fruit or vegetable snack. This could be a small handful of dried fruit, a banana, a pear, clementines or carrot sticks. When they’re really hungry, this can be a good time to get them to try foods they might otherwise refuse.
Dinner time – get into the habit of having two different vegetables on the dinner table. You don't have to insist that the children eat them, but if you always do, they may end up trying them. Vegetables in dishes such as stews and casseroles also count. Avoid adding extra fat, saltand sugar, and use lean cuts of meat.
Plan 5 A DAY snacks

When it comes to snacks, it pays to plan ahead. "Think about times when snacking happens in your family," says Azmina. "Then think what you can do to replace your usual snack with fruit or vegetables."

Making fruit and veg easy to get to is often helpful. When they're peckish, children will often reach for whatever is closest to hand.

Keep a fruit bowl in the living room. Encourage your children to snack from the bowl rather than hunting for snacks in the kitchen.

Keep fruit washed and ready to eat in the fridge. They'll be more tempting when you fancy an instant snack.

Similarly, keep snack-ready vegetables in the fridge, too. Wash and cut up carrots or celery.

Family days out are prime snacking time. Save money by taking small bags of dried fruit, bananas or carrot, celery or pepper sticks with you instead of buying expensive snacks once you're out.
Get children involved in 5 A DAY

Getting your child involved in choosing and preparing fruit and vegetables can encourage them to eat more.

"Familiarise young children with the colours and shapes of fruits and vegetables as early as possible," says Azmina.

"Each weekly shop, let them choose a fruit or vegetable they'd like to try. Supervise your child in the kitchen while they help you prepare it."

Present your children with as wide a variety of fruit and vegetables as possible and make eating them a normal part of family life.

"If your children aren't keen, canned vegetables, such as sweetcorn, lentils and peas, can be a good place to start," says Azmina. Choose canned vegetables in water with no added sugar, and canned fruit in natural fruit juice, rather than syrup.

Disguising vegetables, by grating carrots into bolognese sauce, for example, can also work, but don't rely solely on this.

"Try not to reinforce the idea that vegetables are unpleasant and always need to be hidden in foods. Instead, have fun together by trying lots of different fruit and veg and finding what your children like."

Girl dies as wall collapses on her at school

Girl dies as wall collapses on her at school

A female pupil has died after a wall inside her school collapsed on to her.

The unnamed girl, whose age has also not been disclosed, was pronounced dead at the scene at Liberton High School in Edinburgh.

Emergency services said the incident took place at 10am.

‘Inquiries into the full circumstances surrounding this incident are ongoing and we are working alongside our relevant partner agencies,’ Police Scotland said.

Edinburgh City Council said its staff were providing support to teachers and pupils at the school.

The council was fined £8,000 in February after a girl at the same school was seriously injured when she fell more than 16ft (5m) as teachers tried to free her from a broken-down lift.

The schoolgirl, then aged 15, suffered three fractured vertebrae, bruising over her lower back and a sprained wrist as a result.

She remained in hospital for two days before being discharged and was unable to return to school for a further two weeks, the Heath and Safety Executive (HSE) said at the time.

The HSE confirmed in February that it had investigated the incident and a prosecution was brought against the local authority for ‘serious safety failings’

Government hits back over Royal Mail privatisation

Government hits back over Royal Mail privatisation

by The Weekly Discovery

The government has defended the way in which Royal Mail was privatised last year.

Ministers have taken to the airwaves after the National Audit Office (NAO) published a report concluding that the government undervalued Royal Mail at the expense of the taxpayer.

Amyas Morse, head of the NAO, said:

The department was very keen to achieve its objective of selling Royal Mail and was successful in getting the company listed on the FTSE 100. Its approach, however, was marked by deep caution, the price of which was borne by the taxpayer.

Business minister Michael Fallon, told BBC Radio 4's Today programme the deal represented "value for money for the taxpayer."

He added that "a loss-making public corporation has now been transformed into one of the top 100 British companies."
The NAO believes the government could have got a better price for Royal if it had prioritised competitive pricing over completing the deal on time.

The watchdog also said that the department for Business Innovationa and Skills (BIS) held firm with the lower valuation to keep 16 key long-term institutional investors on board. However, close to half of the shares allocated to these investors were sold shortly after the sale.

The NAO criticised fees paid to financial advisers Lazard, whose £1.5m bill was not dependent on valuation, saying the incentives offered meant “the taxpayer interest was not clearly prioritised within the structure of the independent adviser’s role”.

Royal Mail listed on the London Stock Exchange on 11th October 2013. Shares jumped 38 per cent from 330 pence to 455 pence. The government raised close to £2bn from the sale of its 60 per cent stake.

On the day of Royal Mail's sale the institutional offering was 24 times oversubscribed.

Egypt to hold May 26-27 presidential election

Egypt to hold May 26-27 presidential election

by The Weekly Discovery

Egyptians will vote on May 26-27 in a presidential election that Abdel Fattah al Sisi is expected to win easily, meaning the former army chief could be sworn in as head of state by early June. Sisi enjoys backing from supporters who see him as Egypt’s saviour. It will be the second time Egyptians have voted in a presidential election in less than two years. So far, the only other candidate is leftist politician Hamdeen Sabahi, who came third in the 2012 election that was contested by more than a dozen politicians from across the political spectrum. With Sisi expected to win comfortably, the vote is not likely to go to a second round.

The result of the first round will be announced no later than June 5, the organising committee said at a news conference to outline the timeline for the voting. Sisi stepped down as defence minister and army chief in order to announce his candidacy last Wednesday. He has been lionised by state- and privately-run media that are overwhelmingly loyal to the army-backed government. Parliamentary elections are expected to follow the presidential vote, though a date has yet to be set. Egypt’s next president faces huge challenges including a reviving an economy hit by more than three years of political turmoil.

Bangladesh through to Super 10 despite stunning loss to HK

Bangladesh through to Super 10 despite stunning loss to HK

Chittagong: Hong Kong notched up a stunning two-wicket victory over Bangladesh in a thrilling qualifying round match but could not prevent the home side from booking a Super 10 berth in the World Twenty20 here on Thursday.

Chasing a small target of 109, minnows Hong Kong struggled to 50 for five in the 10th over but a fine rear-guard effort from lower-order batsmen, led by Munir Dar (36), took them to a shock win with two balls to spare at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium.

Despite the loss, Bangladesh sneaked through to the Super 10 by topping Group A on net run rate. They finished the qualifying round on four points -- same as Nepal -- but had a better net run rate of plus 1.466 as against plus 0.933.
Bangladesh would have been knocked out of the tournament had Hong Kong chased down the target in 13.1 overs but that proved to be a tough ask.

Number seven batsman Dar, who top-scored with a 27-ball 36, was mainly responsible for the memorable win for Hong Kong as he took his side to the threshold of victory in the match that went down the wire. Coming at the crease when Hong Kong were down 50 for five after 9.1 overs, Dar kept the asking rate at run-a-ball in the last six overs and took his side to 100, just nine adrift of target, when he was out in the 18th over.

There were some tense moments for Hong Kong as they lost another wicket but finally needed six runs from the last over. Abdur Razzak hit a six off Haseeb Amjad as Hong Kong reached 114 for 8 in 19.4 overs to notch up a historic win.

For Bangladesh, left-arm spinner Shakib-al-Hasan grabbed three wickets for just nine runs to put Hong Kong in trouble initially while Mahmudullah got two wickets for 13 runs. Today`s win by Hong Kong was the fourth such instance by an Associate country defeating a Full Member of the ICC in World Twenty20.

Earlier, Hong Kong left-arm spinner Nadeem Ahmed grabbed four wickets as a listless Bangladesh suffered a dramatic batting collapse to be shot out for just 108. Put into bat, Bangladesh lost two wickets in the dramatic first over but recovered quickly only to suffer a sensational batting collapse as they lost their last seven wickets for just 23 runs in the Group A match.

From 85 for three in the 11th over, they were all out for 108 in 16.3 overs with top-scorer Shakib-al-Hasan`s (34) departure triggering a batting collapse for the home side who have comfortably won their previous two matches. Four Bangladesh batsmen were out for nought while three could score only in single digits. Besides, Shakib who hit six fours in his 27-ball innings, opener Anamul Haque (26), captain Mushfiqur Rahim (23) and Nasir Hossain (14 not out) could reach double figures against a side who have lost both their earlier matches badly.

Ahmed (4/21) got able support from leg-spinner Nizakat Khan (3/19) and pacers Tanwir Afzal (2/24) and Irfan Ahmed (1/17) as Hong Kong bowlers made Bangladesh batsmen pay for their mistakes. Bangladesh began on a disastrous note as they lost two wickets for just three runs in 0.5 overs with opener Tamil Iqbal (0) and one-down Sabbir Rahman (2) dismissed by Tanwir Afzal in the second and fifth balls of the match.

But Shakib-al-Hasan (34) and the other opener Anamul Haque (26) stitched 48 runs from just five overs to steady the innings before the home side suffered another collapse. Once Shakib, who hit six fours in his 27-ball innings, was out in the 11th over, the floodgates were opened and Bangladesh batsmen threw away the advantage and perished in quick succession as if they were competing against each other in returning to the dressing room.

Captain Mushfiqur Rahim (23), Mahmudullah (2), Farhad Reza (0), Abdur Razzak (0) Rubel Hossain (0) and Al-Amin Hossain (1) were out in quick succession as Bangladesh could only put up a meagre total against one of the weakest sides in the tournament.
